The remote viewer designated ORV 007 just happened to be named James, but his last name was not Bond. It was King, of the Richmond, Virginia Kings.

In an ordinary work environment, he would have been subject to the usual jokes, but the Cryptic Events Evaluation Section of the National Reconnaissance Office was no ordinary work environment. It was situated beneath a tea room and tarot parlor in Chantilly, Virginia, and the general public who visited the card readers and mediums who worked there never suspected that an ultra-secret installation lay beneath the floors of the white clapboard building that served as a cover.

More to the point, the viewers who came and went through the back entrance and took the elevator to the remote viewing floor were scheduled carefully so they never encountered one another. Their real names were classified and their numerical designations known only to their supervisors and Director Cranston. No one knew Cranston’s first name. Many subjects suspected Cranston wasn’t his true last name, but there was no point in guessing, and looking into the question on any level would result in termination, in one sense of the word. If not both.

ORV 007 showed up for work at noon. That was what the schedule called for. He was on call 24/7, but most remote viewing taskings were not urgent. They were more in the nature of data collection and exploration of otherwise-unreachable targets.

Reporting to the office of his supervisor, he was handed a plain manila documents folder with the target coordinates written on the tab. He carried this into the viewing room, which was a blue egg-shaped space large enough to contain a modest bunk, side table, and control console for indirect lighting and sound.

Reclining down on the bunk, King dialed down the lighting until the room became a gray blur. The absence of flat walls and sharp corners made everything recede. He began to disassociate from reality.

Reaching for the control panel, he brought up a white-noise program and laid his head on the pillow, relaxing into the soft sound that resembled frying bacon. It always gave him a creepy feeling to start. He was tuning out everything he knew in an effort to tune into the unknown.

There remained sufficient light to read the numbers on the tab. The manila folder otherwise had no contents. It’s where he would put his written session notes. Until the session was concluded, the coordinates were the contents.

King began memorizing the coordinates, repeating them over and over in his mind until they were fixed in his short-term memory. Then he set aside the folder and lowered the lights to complete darkness.

The process to mentally detach from his physical body and go to the place in space-time that the encrypted coordinates represented was a complicated mental exercise, and ORV 007 started going through the procedures in the methodical way he had been taught.

After twenty minutes, King felt himself ready. Envisioning himself in his mental safe place called Sanctuary, standing before a steel-ringed well, he paused.
